Riva Wolf, (Polish-American, 1933-2020) "Memorabilia" Pastel on Paper.
This piece is beautiful in its own right and profoundly moving paired with Riva's history. In beautiful shades of pink, blue, green, and peach, this piece is a drawer set atop letters. Inside the drawer are a passport, pocketwatch, framed black and white photo, ribbon, playing cards, dominos, needle and thread and other items.
Riva Wolf was born in Warsaw, Poland, the daughter of a rabbi, her family moved to France not long after she was born. As the Nazis took over Europe she was sent to Switzerland with a Christian group to be hidden. She and three sisters survived, her parents and two brothers died in Auschwitz. After the war she moved to America where she illustrated fashions for newspapers.
Riva trained at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and The Art Students League in New York.
